James A. Murphy is a co-founder and Chairman of the law firm Murphy & McGonigle, P.C. (www.mmlawus.com) with offices in New York and Washington, D.C. The law firm was created to serve the regulatory and litigation needs of the financial services industry–both incumbents and disruptors. The firm has 12 partners who formerly served in senior roles at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), as well as partners with previous service at the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), U.S. Department of Justice and the New York Department of Financial Services. The firm’s most recent hire, Danny Alter, was a principal architect of New York’s BitLicense while serving at the New York DFS.
Today, much of Murphy & McGonigle’s focus is on advising clients with respect to meeting the challenges and seizing the opportunities presented by blockchain technology. For example, the firm has recently advised on a number of cryptoasset derivative products, innovative trading platforms and investment vehicles.
The firm recently created the “Blockchain Law Center” (www.blockchainlawcenter.com) which is a public resource focused on legal and regulatory developments in the blockchain space. The firm’s private “Blockchain Litigation Database” tracks developments in all civil litigation, regulatory enforcement proceedings and criminal cases in the U.S. related to cryptocurrencies and other blockchain applications.
